Nuffield thinking at the PATT/ITEA conference
David Barlex presented a paper (co-authored with Torben Steeg) that related the sustainability and STEM agendas in the curriculum in England to the TIDE elements – Technology (T) Innovation (I) Design (D) Engineering (E) – that were the theme of the ITEA conference. Interestingly the STEM agenda is becoming increasingly important on both sides of the Atlantic. You can read their paper when it appears on the PATT/ITEA website (hotlink).
Marion Rutland presented a paper that described the cognitive demands of food technology (as opposed to its use to teach cooking skills) and how this could be related to the TIDE elements. The response to her presentation indicated an awakening interest in food technology as part of a technology curriculum that requires scientific understanding to inform design decisions.
You can read her paper when it appears on the PATT/ITEA website.
