The Nuffield Foundation
The Scheme, which is part of the Royal Academy of Engineering's Best programme, started 18 years ago. It encourages gifted and talented students to consider professional engineering as a career.
It does this by arranging for a professional engineer to advise a team of four students and their contact teacher over a period of five months as they work on a real engineering problem.
In 2002/03 over 1200 students (82% from state schools) are participating with 281 companies; of these 30% are female and 12% are from an ethnic minority.
